Mauritius, is an island country in Africa located in the southwestern Indian Ocean 550 km east of Madagascar.
Mauritius includes the main island, Rodrigues and numerous coral atolls. It is part of the Mascarene Islands, an archipelago of volcanic origin, probably belonging to a submerged chain which also includes, among other things, the Seychelles and La Réunion islands. The main island, Mauritius, was formed as a result of three eruptive episodes, the first occurring 7.8–6.8 million years ago.
Mauritius is known for its outstanding natural beauty. In his travel diary, Following the Equator, Mark Twain noted that 'One gets the impression that Mauritius was created first and then paradise, and that paradise was copied from Mauritius'. It is surrounded by coral reefs, which, over time, have produced the characteristic white sand of its beaches.
Mauritius has no official language; however, being a former colony of the United Kingdom, from which it gained independence in 1968, the language used in parliamentary acts is English, although the most widely spoken is Mauritian Creole, largely based on French.
